Use of Eminent Domain against the Orland Plaza

An attempt is being made to use Eminent Domain to forceably remove existing businesses from the Orland Plaza, located at 143rd and Lagrange Road, to continue with the debacle that is the development, "Main Street Triangle Redevelopment Project". (Click here for seperate Blog, Main Street Triangle, to participate in a discussion of this Project.)

Concerned Citizens of Orland Park is against this action. We do not believe it is right to force these businesses out to facilate this ill concieved and poorly executed project.

The Village Trustees approved this measure on September 15, 2008. The motion was made by Trustee Dodge, and seconded by Trustee O'Halloran. The motion carried as follows:
Voting Aye:
Village President - McLaughlin
Trustees - Fenton, O'Halloran, Dodge, Gira
Voting Nay:
Trustee - Murphy
Absent:
Trustee - Schussler

For more details on this motion, see the Board of Trustees minutes for September 15, 2008, Ref: 2008-0606 Main Street Triangle Redvelopment Project - Ordinance. You can find this information on the official Village of Orland Park website, under Agendas and Minutes, Board of Trustees Minutes.

Do you believe this is a proper use of eminent domain? (Why are they resorting to Eminent Domain? Click here for seperate Blog, Main Street Triangle, for more information on this issue.)

Would you support a referendum to stop the use of Eminent Domain in this instance?

You can cast your Vote on these 2 questions to the right of this blog.

  1. Despicable wanton use of Government power to squash what was the original retailing in Orland Park all for the glory of our Mayor

  2. Why would you want to force/temporarily close (as the village gets their cronies to build retail and condo space) thriving businesses and then pick and chose which ones can come back. Who are they that they can just throw businesses out of the village of Orland Park at will, remember that most of these businesses are owned by our neighbors and have contributed (both tax dollars and donations) to the village for many years. In these economics times we should be thankful for any business that wants to stay here in Orland. WAKE UP PEOPLE THINGS ARE NOT GETTING BETTER AND AS LONG AS WE FORCE TAX DOLLARS OUT OF THE COMMUNITY IT'S GOING TO GET WAY WORSE.

  3. The people I speak with are just amazed at lack of accountability in regards to this project. People ask why the village commits our tax funds to such an ill conceived project. Is the village aware of the vacant retail space just across Lagrange Road? Why do they assume this development will be successful? Arrogance I assume.

From what I understand, the village has an entire team of city planners working on this project. Interesting to say the least in comparison, to say Tinley Park, as Orland Park is years behind in having a great downtown district. In fact, you can say that we are behind just about every other affluent suburb in the Chicago area. Perhaps it would be best for the Mayor to take this group of planners by the hand over it Tinley Park so they can finally learn how to create a downtown district that the residents can be happy with, that businesses will occupy, and the overall burden to the tax payer will be minimized.
